Founder's story

Ms. Krishnapriya’s journey from sports to dance and years of experience of working in the industry with some of the top icons and artists led her to create Nakshatra Dance Academy (NDA) in 2004, driven by a love for movement and a passion for helping others grow. What started as a leap of faith grew into a space where dancers of all backgrounds can find their rhythm, build confidence, and express themselves freely.

Despite the challenges, she turned every obstacle into a chance to grow, shaping NDA into what it is today. With exciting plans ahead, Ms. Krishnapriya remains dedicated to inspiring others and showing just how powerful dance can be.

2. What motivated you to start Nakshatra Dance Academy (NDA)?
Was there a specific need in the community that sparked this idea?

In 2004, I felt there was something missing in the community – a place where people could explore dance beyond the traditional styles like ballet. I wanted to create a space where dancers could express themselves freely, and that’s how NDA was born. It’s all about making dance accessible and encouraging creativity in everyone who walks through our doors.

3. What challenges did you face when starting NDA?
How did you overcome them?

Starting NDA wasn’t easy, especially as a woman in a pretty competitive space. Getting the resources I needed and building the academy’s reputation were big challenges. But I pushed through by staying connected with the community and networking strategically. Every setback just became a new lesson that helped us grow stronger.

4. What was your initial vision for NDA, and how has it changed over time?

At first, I just wanted NDA to be a space that embraced individuality and diversity in dance. Over the years, though, it’s grown into something much bigger – a place where personal growth, creativity, and community are just as important as learning dance moves.

5. What makes your teaching methods unique?
How do they help students build confidence and creativity?

We do things a bit differently at NDA by focusing on individual expression and encouraging students to try different styles. From Bollywood to freestyle, contemporary, folk, lyrical, and even sitting dance, we make sure there’s something for everyone. It’s all about helping students find their voice as dancers while building their confidence along the way.

6. Can you share a memorable success story from NDA?
How did it affect you and your students?

There are so many stories, but one that stands out is about a young girl who struggled with low self-esteem. Over time, through our classes and support, she transformed into a confident performer and even took the lead role in one of our major showcases. Watching her journey was inspiring for everyone at NDA, and it really reinforced my belief in the power of dance to change lives.

7. What are the core values of NDA?
How do they shape the academy's culture?

At NDA, our core values are inclusivity, empowerment, and creativity. These values create a space where students feel welcomed and respected, no matter their background. It’s important to us that everyone feels part of a team while still having the freedom to explore their unique talents.

8. How important is community at NDA?
How do you create a sense of belonging among your students?

Community is everything at NDA. We organize collaborative performances, workshops, and fun social events to help students connect with each other. It’s more than just dance – it’s about building friendships and support systems that go beyond the studio.

9. What dance styles do you offer?
How do you decide what to include in the curriculum?

We offer a variety of styles, like Bollywood, freestyle, folk, modern, lyrical, contemporary, K-pop, and sitting dance. Our curriculum evolves based on what students are interested in and what’s trending in the dance world, so there’s always something fresh and exciting to learn.

10. What advice would you give someone thinking about joining NDA?
What should they expect from the experience?

If you’re considering joining NDA, I’d say go for it! This isn’t just a place to learn dance – it’s a chance to discover yourself, build confidence, and make lifelong friends. You’ll find a welcoming environment where creativity and personal growth are just as important as technique.

11. How do you stay involved with your students?
What’s your approach to mentorship?

I’m hands-on at NDA – I teach, mentor, and make it a point to engage with my students regularly. I believe in open communication and being approachable, so my students feel comfortable sharing their challenges and dreams with me. This connection makes the mentorship experience more meaningful.

12. What’s next for NDA?
Any new programs or future goals on the horizon?

We’ve got some exciting things planned! I’m working on introducing new programs focused on holistic development, like dance therapy and personal wellness workshops. These initiatives will complement our artistic side and help dancers nurture both their minds and bodies.

1. What inspired you to pursue dance, and how did your journey begin?
Were there any key moments that shaped your early dance years?

I’ve always loved performing and expressing myself, and that naturally pulled me towards dance. Funny enough, I started as an athlete – I was a sprinter and was even named Sportswoman of the Year multiple times over seven years.

The discipline from sports really helped when I transitioned into dance. A big moment for me was winning “Best Female Dancer” and “Best Choreographer” back in 2006, which made me realize that dance was something I wanted to pursue seriously.
